I love my dirt
Hasn't the weather this past week been fabulous? (If you don't live around here you can commence your jealousy in 5, 4, 3, 2, ...) I have taken the kids outside SANS JACKETS every day this week. AND we had a picnic with the Cooks yesterday for lunch, AND our garden is prepped, AND my lawn is raked and "snowbank suprise" decluttered, AND.... okay, I'm done, but doesn't it all sound so wonderful? Oh yeah, AND I've got my composting system up and running. Funny how after all the research I ended up going with pretty much the most low-tech and labour-intensive method - but it's so "hands on" and I'm really learning. (I would happily go into all the itty-bitty details if I thought anyone cared - sufficeth to say, the age of compost has arrived here in the Crosby household.)
But my garden - oh, baby! No, seriously, I love it like a child. (In fact, considering some of the recent antics of the juveniles in our household, I think I can safely say that I love it more than my children.) Since this is a new garden (we removed the grass and bordered it last fall) we had a little prep to do, namely... a) turning the packed soil for the first time, b) leveling from end to end (our garden is long and narrow with some extra dirt added at one end), and c) making some soil amendments (nothing big, just some peat and a little extra topsoil and we'll see how that goes first). Actually I think the soil looked pretty good to begin with and I have high hopes for our first year. I'll share a little secret with you. This morning as we finished the amendments, I sent Trev and the kids to the little park on our cul-de-sac. As soon as they were around the corner and out of sight I ditched the hoe and just got down on my hands and knees, working out some of the bigger clumps by hand. I was having so much fun I lost track of time playing in the dirt and had to force myself to go join everyone at the park. Seriously, I'm feeling very passionately toward that little 245 square foot patch out there. I wonder how it's doing out there all alone, should I go check on it, do you think? Now I'm starting to feel a little guilty - I never check on my kids after I've tucked them in for the night.

stfd
I've really been looking forward to warm weather for one particular reason. Compost.
I know, it's not as glamorous as a tan, or as healthy as outdoor sports, but it is one of the reasons I've been excited to cease apartment-dwelling. So I've been trying to figure out the logistics of the whole project. What type, where in my yard, how not to attract vermin, etc. (Your suggestions and imput are welcome, btw). I have come to realize something about myself during this process, however. I suffer from STFD, otherwise known as "start-to-finish disorder". I cannot, and I mean CAN NOT, just find a good idea and go with it. I must research and re-research and then look around a little more. I end up going WAY to deep and getting muddled up in all the info. Seriously, could I not just pick a project and FINISH it!
On the upside, I know where to get all the goods online about composting.
